The police have released a sketch of a man who tried to grab two young girls who were jumping rope in their Long Island backyard on Maple Avenue in Mineola. The girls were playing around 4:40 pm when two men approached the girls. The men chased the girls around the yard, one of the girls was pushed to the ground and hit on the face but was able to scream for help frightening the men. The second girl had managed to run away from the men but she wasn’t hurt, police have said.

The men were described as having dark or olive skin and sporting beards, about 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet tall. They were both wearing yellow pants and blue shirts. One of the men escaped the area in a dark-colored car.

Both girls told their parents what happened and their parents then called 911

The father of one of the girls said that “The girls were jump-roping in the backyard and one of the perps said, ‘What’s your name? Do you want to come into my car? Do you want to come into Chevy?’ then opened the gate and came in after them,” he said.

Nassau County police praised the girls for their actions. By yelling and running, they may have prevented their own kidnapping.

“They definitely did the right thing,” Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun said. “When there’s any type of stranger-danger situation, you can flight, you can fight, you can get away, you can run. But for the most part, you have to protect yourself.”

Detectives request anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
