What football lovers love about the NFL game is the intensity, the hits, the flips, the toss, the touchdown. This is what makes the game exciting, well hold on football lovers because the NFL 2018 Season will change how the players play the game. The new helmet law will not allow players to lower their head. “Use of the Helmet. It is a foul if a player lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against an opponent.” So how will this impact how the players play the game?
Under this new law, there could be a penalty on literally every single play not to mention that players will have to be retaught not to lower their head when running a play.
“As Deadspin pointed out, the NFL’s release indicated the rule won’t actually appear on its own in the rulebook, but would instead be ‘classified as unnecessary roughness.’ The language for that violation was changed from ‘using any part of a player’s helmet or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily’ to ‘using any part of a player’s helmet to butt, spear, or ram an opponent.’ In other words, the NFL removed the words ‘violently or unnecessarily.'”
This new policy comes after research discovered that football players were getting CTE which stands for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. In CTE, a protein called Tau forms clumps that slowly spread through the brain, killing brain cells. A study from July 2017 showed that 110 of 111 deceased NFL players had CTE.
The most recent player to pass, 21-year-old Tyler Hilinski whose minds was so clogged with CTE that researchers said he had the brain of a much older, elderly man. Let’s not forget Aaron Hernandez who was charged with murder but committed suicide in jail. Doctors reveal he also was suffering from CTE. Doctors found that former football player Aaron Hernandez had Stage 3 CTE, which researchers had never seen in a brain younger than 46 years old.
Now coaches and players will have to work around this new policy to win the game. Will our beloved football still excite fans without the hard hits? Either way, the fact that we now know that these football players are being affected with CTE we can make changes like this policy to prevent their deaths later on in life.
