Despite coming forward and testifying before the Senate Judicial Committee on allegations that US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Blasely Ford, Republicans have announced that they will not let anything stand in the way of Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Even with three other accusers coming forward to testify against Kavanaugh and several classmates of the judge from Yale who has said that when he drank he was belligerent and aggressive.
The FBI’s investigation so far has been weak without interviewing any of the witnesses that have come forward to testify what they know about Brett Kavanaugh. They also have failed to interview Dr. Christine Blasely Ford. Ford’s attorneys have sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and FBI General Counsel Dana Boente on Tuesday but they have yet to respond to their inquiries.
One classmate of Kavanaugh’s, Chad Ludington told the New York Times that he often drank with Kavanaugh, “When Brett got drunk, he was often belligerent and aggressive. On one of the last occasions I purposely socialized with Brett, I witnessed him respond to a semi-hostile remark, not by defusing the situation, but by throwing his beer in the man’s face and starting a fight that ended with one of our mutual friends in jail.”
With all the people coming forward this has not deterred Republicans and President Trump to consider another candidate for the US Supreme Court. On Wednesday, President Trump held a rally in Mississippi where he mocked Dr. Ford’s story that she told in front of the Senate Judicial Committee. People of all sides were outraged that the President would ridicule someone who came forward to tell their sexual assault story. Republicans at the rally laughed and cheered as Trump mimicked Ford’s recollection of the night, Kavanaugh, sexually assaulted her.
People took to Twitter to express their anger at the President’s behavior.
“DonalTrumpmp proves there is no bottom to his barrel of indecency as he mocks Dr. Ford. Every decent person in this country should remember in November.” Barbara Streisand.
“Dr. Ford showed courage, power, and strength in her testimony. She should be treated with dignity and respect– not demeaned and belittled by the President of the United States.” US Senate Candidate, Bety O’Rourke.
“Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me with this? What is the purpose of this? Was there no other vitriol you could spew to rile up your base and deepen this country’s divide? You used THIS?? Do you even understand the message you’re sending? Where is your sense of human decency?” Chris Evans.
The question remains if Republicans nominate Brett Kavanaugh for the US Supreme Court will it hurt their votes in November? Studies have shown that movements like “MeToo” have found women leaning more towards the Democrat Party as well as the growing number of women running for office. According to Pew Research Center, “Women have been more likely than men to identify as Democrats for decades, but today, 56 percent of women consider themselves Democrats or Lean Democratic. The same is only true for 44 percent of men.”
